Protect your home from Ice Dams this icy season with some tips and tricks from Atex Builders!
WHAT IS AN ICE DAM?
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that prevents snow and water from going down your gutters. Ice dams can ruin your roof, walls, ceiling, and, eventually, the foundation of your house.
WHY SHOULD YOU CLEAN OUT YOUR GUTTERS OFTEN?
You should clean out your gutters often because your gutters control the flow of rainwater to protect your roof, walls, and the foundation of your house.
HOW TO SPOT AN ICE DAM?
Look for big icicles hanging from your roof, any snow that is melted on your roof will cause ice dams. Sometimes the gutter will be sagging, and the soffit will droop. Occasionally, you can notice it from the inside if you notice water damage on the walls and ceilings, or paint bubbles.
HOW TO REMOVE AN ICE DAM?
Pull off snow with a long- handled aluminum roof rake while you stand safely on the ground. If you don’t have a roof rake you can also use a long-handled garden rake or hoe, again, standing safely on the ground.
HOW TO PREVENT AN ICE DAM ON YOUR ROOF?
You can prevent ice dams on your roof by closing all attic bypasses, adding roof and soffit vents, measuring your attic insulation level. Finally, you can rake the snow off of your roof after a heavy snowfall.
